Winter Session: Surfing the Baltic in January

Cold water, 5mm wetsuits, and perfect offshore conditions. Why winter is secretly the best season.

Most people think the Baltic surf season ends in October. They are wrong. January delivered some of the cleanest, most powerful waves we have seen all year — and with water temperatures around 3°C and air at minus 5, we had the lineup entirely to ourselves.

There is something magical about surfing in winter. The light is low and golden, ice crystals form on your wetsuit between sets, and every wave feels earned. Our wooden boards handle the cold beautifully — the natural flex of the timber seems to come alive in cold water, and the warmth of the wood is noticeable even through 5mm neoprene.

If you have never tried winter surfing, come join us. We lend boards and provide hot chocolate afterwards.
